Defensive Driving

Several questions often asked of Safestway Driving School is:

What is Defensive Driving? What does it include? What's different?

In order to answer these questions we would like to give you our reason for and definition of Defensive Driving.

Traffic accidents are everyone's concern. The traffic problem in the United States is not, as is commonly supposed,
the worst in the world. In fact, our per-mile accident rate is considerably lower than that of most civilized countries, mostly as the result of intensive safety campaigns and better driver education, law enforcement, roads, and vehicles.

But, the traffic accident problem is still much too serious to ignore, especially when you consider that...every 10 minutes someone dies in an automobile accident-six die every hour- 150 every day.

In one year, about 55,000 people--the population of a small sized city--are killed in traffic accidents.

One out of every two people living today will be involved in a crippling of fatal traffic accident.

A lot of individuals and organizations care what happens to these drivers, these include the President of the United States, the governor of the state, the mayor of your community, your city police, traffic courts, traffic engineers and your schools.

Defensive Driving: The Art of Staying Alive

Defensive driving is a key concept in the Driver Improvement Program. It represents an approach to the driving task that, when applied, can lessen your chances of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. Defensive driving means driving so as to prevent accidents in spite of the actions of others or the presence of adverse driving conditions.

Defensive Driving Course Objectives:

1) Reinforce safe driving habits
Identify consequences of over driving the road conditions (dark, narrow shoulders)

2) Teach some skills that the student may be able to employ to counter or correct errors, which could result in loss of control or skidding

3) Teach effects of fatigue, reduced visibility and reaction time

4) Teach the running commentary (in learning to adjust various traffic situations, good habits can be developed easily by talking about what you see)

5) Teach: What do you do when your headlights go out, your car catches fire, you must stop on a highway, your hood flies up, you're on a collision course, your car plunges into water, etc...

As a defensive driver, you'll learn to "give" a little, to tailor your driving behaviour to the unexpected actions of other drivers and pedestrians, to the unpredictable and ever changing factors of light, weather, road and traffic conditions, to the mechanical condition of your vehicle, and even how you feel.

We at Safestway hope that some of your questions, if not all, have been answered here, and remember us when it comes time to serve your needs.

We offer classroom and "behind the wheel" defensive driving. We will come to the worksite or employees home for Driver's Training. We offer group rates. For "behind the wheel" we certify completion after 4 hours of training.
